The Question of Worship

Narda Reid

Today, many people don't know who to worship, what to worship, or even if they should worship. Are you one? 3 Reasons to Reconsider...

"Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: ..." John 4:22 KJV

The great controversy between God and Satan started because of worship.

Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14, paint a vivid picture of Lucifer seeking worship and homage that belonged only to God. I have always wondered at Lucifer's audacity. A created being wanted the glory that could only be given to the Creator. It is like parents giving birth to a child and the child begins to demand the role of the parents at any cost. If my child was to go around telling me that I should call her Mom and that if I do not obey her she will put me out of my house, I would think she has completely lost her mind. Yet that is exactly what Lucifer attempted and failed miserably.

What is worship?

Revelation 14:6 proclaims an everlasting message: "And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people," Revelation 14:6 "Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters." Revelation 14:7.

In the Strong's Concordance, worship is word #4352: proskuneo (pronounced pros-koo-neh'-o) from word 4314 and maybe a derivative of word #2965 (meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his master's hand); to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (literally or figuratively) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore):--worship.

Why worship?

I believe that John, the penner of Revelation 14:6,7, was simply echoing the words of the wise king Solomon: "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." Ecclesiastes 12:13

Therefore, the reason we worship God is tied to the three commands and components listed in Revelation 14: "Fear God! ...Give Glory to Him!... Worship Him!"

  1. Fear God!

We respect God because He is worthy; and obey Him because we hate evil (Proverbs 8:13). He has proven His authority (not because He needed to, but because of the need to grow our faith). God is undeniably faithful and true.

2. Give Glory to Him!

We recognize that God is in authority and has the power to transform our sinful, ugly images into incredibly beautiful masterpieces. By our conversion and our growing transformation, we praise and glorify Him. We reflect His character.

3. Worship Him!

We worship God because we respect Him; we admire His beauty of Character in the world, and within us. We also worship Him because He made us. He is our Creator, and in a much more elevated manner than we love and honor our parents who "created" us when the sperm and egg united and fruited,... we love and honor Him. We pledge allegiance and complete loyalty because we trust Him. We worship and bow down only to the One we believe is God, period! We kiss like a dog its master, the God of our mind, body, heart, and soul. We worship because we love Him who first loved us.

Today, many people don't know who to worship; what to worship; or even if they should worship, just like the woman at the well in John chapter 4. Some rebelliously worship false gods (1 Kings 18: 16-38 ), while others do so out of ignorance. It has been said that the only thing we can offer God that He has not given to us is "WORSHIP". Perhaps this is very debatable, but maybe the point that is being made is that we have a choice in who we worship, therefore let us choose to spiritually and intellectually settle into truth. How? Fear God...Give glory to Him...Worship Him because we are now in the time of Judgement.

"But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him."

John 4:23 KJV

Prayer: Lord, as we near the end of another year and many are celebrating Christmas, Channukah or Kwaanza, etc., may our lives be impacted by the fact that we are in the time of judgment and need to make up our minds about whose side we are on... who do we worship, once and for all. May we choose wisely, may we choose You. Amen.
