It is great to wake up in a warm bed on a cold winter morning. The sun shines as if it is still summer, but you know it is freezing outside. You roll over a little disoriented and then remember that today is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God, and your muscles relax immediately. Your face breaks into a winsome smile, and your body remembers the quiet rhythm that only the tempo of Sabbath can beat: " Peace, be still...".
Your heart bubbles with laughter and your lips break into a hum, then a merry song: " 'Happy' never sounded better, LORD, because Sabbath is all about the joyful time I know I will spend with you! "
The Bible never lies and gives us timely reminders of how to spend this weekly intimacy of true worship:
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. (Positive boundaries)
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: (Tells us when and how long)
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: (informs us of when the Sabbath happens and that God owns the Sabbath and He alone has the power to modify or change it)
in it thou shalt not do any work, (Talking to me, us...and that it is our duty to uphold it)
thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, (God's expectation for your children on the Sabbath) ( Did you notice that God already expects the husband and wife to be on the same page in regards to Sabbath observance when he said "thou"?
thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, (God's expectation for our employees on the Sabbath)
nor thy cattle, (God's expects that even the animals that we use for labor should rest on the Sabbath)
nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: (God expects that our visitors should be informed about how we spend the Sabbath, and should respect its observance as well)
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. (Exodus 20:8-11). (God expects us to follow His example alone and not our own... If He blessed and sanctified it, who are we to desecrate it by doing whatever we want instead?
Wow! The Sabbath is filled with blessings only as we spend it God's way: It prepares us for the time when heaven will be a reality and we will be "forever" spending time with Jesus, God the Father, the Holy Spirit, and a battalion of amazing angels!
Where are you now, reader? Are you still under the covers hiding away? Hurry, Jesus promises an extra special visit today. So throw off your covers and get on your knees... give God thanks and praise... say whatever you please! The Sabbath is a happy day...
